The Gift of Beauty for Ashes
As we countdown the 25 gifts we have already received because Christ has come, we talk today about the gift of beauty for ashes.
Beauty for ashes is heralds back to a time when it was customary to don sackcloth and sit in ashes during times of grief and repentance. God sent Isaiah to proclaim good news for the poor, freedom for prisoners, and comfort for the brokenhearted.
When Isaiah promises beauty for ashes, he was reminding us that things of this world will pass, and we need not sit in our grief and despair. Instead we can revel in the good news that God has given us. And while Isaiah could only long for the coming Messiah, we have the privilege of knowing His Name –– Jesus of Nazareth, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
What an amazing gift we have received.
