The Gift of A New Command
Why is it significant that God has gifted us a new command? One reason is that it is part of the new covenant relationship we now enjoy through the blood of Jesus. Don’t misunderstand – God has always loved His people even in the Old Testament when laws and sacrifice still defined His followers.
The gift of festivals, laws, feasts and sacrifices were evidence that God’s love and favour were on His people right from the start. However this new command out of John 13 stems from the fact that Christ fulfilled each of the laws and demonstrated the completion of God’s plan, and therefore we too ought to love one another out of our deep gratitude for what God has done.
This new command to love one another is a tremendous gift, and one that we should be thankful for at Christmas and all the year through.
