CB Kids December 11
This month, we’ll see how angels in the Bible told stories of good news about Jesus. We’ll see how they brought messages to everyone they met, messages about being a part of God’s big plan to bring help and hope to everyone. We’ll be traveling throughout the City of Angels, checking out all the ways angels brought the good news of Jesus to ordinary people like us! Today's big idea: Jesus calms our fears.
Ask your child:
Do you think it's fun or not fun to scare someone? Do you think it's fun or not fun to be scared by someone else? Why do you think some people find it fun to be scared?
Have some fun:
Make a calming jar. Here's the materials you'll need and the instructions:
Read these verses from the Bible:
Luke 1:26-38, 46b-55; Isaiah 35:1-4
Talk about it:
Gabriel’s message to Mary, while a little frightening in the beginning, ended up being a joyful one. Jesus was coming to Earth and Mary was going to play a big part in making that happen.
Pray together:
God, thank you for giving us Jesus, who calms our fears. Just like Mary did when she knew Jesus would be coming soon, help us to turn our fears into joy by trusting in you. Because of Jesus, we know we can stay calm when we get scared. Amen.
Learn the memory verse:
“But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people!’” (Luke 2:10)
Recap:
Today's story reminds us that when we know that God is in control, we can put our fears on hold and hold on to Jesus instead!

Make a calming jar. Here's the materials you'll need and the instructions:
- Glass or plastic jars with lids
- 1/2 cup glitter glue or clear glue
- Distilled water
- Hot glue gun
- 1–2 teaspoons glitter (optional)
- Pour 1/2 cup of distilled water into the jar.
- Pour 1/2 cup of glitter glue or clear glue into the jar and wait two minutes for it to settle.
- Add additional glitter if you choose, and then fill jar with some of the remaining water.
- Use a hot glue gun to squeeze a ring of glue around the lid of the jar. Press the lid onto the jar and secure with the metal ring.
- Shake vigorously several times over the next little while to help the glue disburse completely.

- Why do you think Mary stopped being afraid about the message the angel brought her?
- What is one way you normally handle fear?
- In what ways does Jesus calm our fears?
